THE SECRET LIFE OF MACHINES

I made these robotic works during the first year of my MFA. Creating these characters allowed me to experiment with different techniques of process and presentation.

Technically I was interested in the line and form achievable by cold working process and the optical attention it revealed. I enjoyed the combination of hot and cold manipulation to produce works with detail and personality. The larger pieces enabled me to practice my own personal limits of team work, technique and process, which at the time was important.

Conceptually I enjoyed creating dystopian environments for the pieces to be viewed in, I am particularly interested in satirical views of the future and enjoyed playing with the audience, encouraging their own participation and imagination.

p.s. The title of these works is plagiarised from a hero of mine, Tim Hunkin; he wrote comic strips about engineering and how things work and a television series in the late 80′s that inspired me greatly! www.timhunkin.com and www.secretlifeofmachines.com
